With the closing of Summer 2016, Disney's marketing machine is starting to pump it's biggest muscles for the Fall and Winter seasons. Naturally, Walt Disney Animation Studios' November 23rd release of Moana is one of Disney's largest releases of the Holiday season, comfortably sitting beside Marvel's Doctor Strange and Lucasfilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as one big Disney family. It is only fitting then to have our first tsunami of Moana Concept Art, behind-the-scenes studio images, and (OF COURSE) new Poster and subsequent theatrical trailer arrive as soon out of the gate as possible. While the official theatrical trailer is set to sail this Thursday on Good Morning America, I am proud to eagerly showcase the brand spanking new Moana poster and and concept art/promotional material all after the break!
Official MOANA Poster:
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who voices Moana's trusty demigod Maui and first released our first look at the new poster yesterday, has subsequently tweeted a GIF of five international posters:
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016. MOANA Concept Art and Behind-the-Scenes Studio Images:
Besides stating the obvious that many if not all of the pieces of concept art for this film look absolutely stunning, I am particularly taken by the official poster. Not only does it present the physical and psychological characteristics of our main protagonists particularly well, but the way in which the ocean serves as a physical backdrop is truly unlike anything we've seen before. The risen wall effect alone seems to be worth the price of admission. Throw in gorgeously crafted character and environment design, catchy and sophisticated song-writing, and above all intriguing characters and personalities, and you've got one heck of a Disney animated film. But even more impressive is how detail-oriented and meticulous the team led by Disney veteran directors Ron Clements and John Musker seems to be (as shown in the photographs) in researching, showcasing, celebrating, and honoring the lives and cultures of native Pacific peoples. Truly inspiring work.
