Walt Disney Animation Studios' newest Princess, Moana, is set to sail the big screen this upcoming November 23rd! With just over a month until the film's debut, Disney has released the first Moana Clip on the newly sanctioned "Moana Mondays," a phrase that the studio is using to segment every Monday of a new week to reveal new information or press materials for the moviegoing public! Check out the first Moana film clip from today's "Moana Mondays" after the break!
First Moana Film Clip:
While I do love the quick banter between Moana and Maui, I do have an issue with the "tweet" joke. One of the many things I love- and we all love- about Disney Animated films is their timeless quality. I feel that the "tweet" joke that Maui uses to describe how he signs things for his fans is perhaps too on the nose and ephemeral. What sets Disney Animation and Pixar apart from the rest of animation competition is the lack of pop-culture references and jokes that we are used to hearing in say Dreamworks' Shrek or Illumination's Despicable Me franchises. I hope that this one joke is not an example of what the bulk of the comedy in Moana will be. Especially for a film that celebrates ancient culture and traditional family values, Moana does not seem to meld with pop-cultural jokes and antics.
